Transtonality —
A reference for composers
From The Top Down is a harmonic reference
source which can be used to provide a particular
perspective to the technique of musical
composition called TRANSTONALITY. By the use
of the information contained in this book a
composer is able to develop new insights into
methods of chord selection, chord voicing and
overall harmonic constructions.
The theories developed within the texts, charts
and music examples do not seek to exclude the
traditional tonal methods as known and practiced
today, rather, the goal is to expand the harmonic
flexibility and fluidity of music writing which has
evolved over the centuries.
This is accomplished by illustrating some of the
kinships of the various possible twelve pitches
and demonstrating their comprehensive
commonalities and tonal relationships within the
system of equal temperament.
Specifically the details introduced are a means
of interfacing given melody or bass tones through
the use of transtonal harmonic coordinates. The
result of this then opens up avenues of tonality,
which lead to the paradigm of transtonality.
